INTRODUCTION

Over the last two decades significant interest has developed in Islamic economic development among policy-makers, researchers and enterprises. The increased interest is due to the following reasons:

  • opening up of Islamic societies to the global economy;

  • increasing flows of financial assets, human capital, knowledge, technology and innovation to and from the Islamic world;

  • diverse world views of socioeconomic development in Islamic communities, which have resulted in varying levels of socioeconomic development in the Islamic world – leading to uneven distribution of wealth among the various communities in the Islamic world; and,

  • the rise of Islamic banking & finance as an alternate financial system to the conventional financial architecture.

To support Islamic countries’ aim of leap-frogging to the knowledge economy and enhancing the socioeconomic well-being of citizens, the School of Business at Monash University Sunway Campus proposes to establish an Educational Strength in ‘Islamic Economic Development’.

OBJECTIVES

This education strength will:

  • enhance human capital development by enabling scholars from the region to undertake undergraduate, post-graduate and research-based education in Islamic Economic Development Studies – backed by the experience and expertise in the school and the faculty;

  • focus on building sustainable competitiveness in areas of critical economic importance for Malaysia and other countries in the Islamic world ;

  • foster linkages and collaborations between scholars, policy-makers and industry in the region through the development of new courses, training programs, conferences and workshops; and

  • strengthen the reputation and standing of Malaysia as a leader in the Islamic world for delivery of world-class tertiary education – fulfilling the vision of the Malaysian Government to transform the education sector into a Regional Centre of Educational Excellence.

The education strength will also play a critical role in facilitating the transformation of the Malaysian education sector into a centre of educational excellence by:

  • pursuing research-led learning and encouraging knowledge transfer to the public sector and local industry;

  • developing programs, seminars and workshops to continuously upgrade the skills and knowledge of the local community; and

  • producing well-prepared graduates who can value-add to the economy and Islamic communities.

METHOD/APPROACH

The education strength would undertake three primary activities:

  • provide educational programs related to the transformation of science and technology to wealth & socioeconomic development initiatives for students, civil servants, researchers and industry in the Islamic world;

  • provide hands-on training and workshops for industry to undertake research into the creation of wealth from scientific and innovative endeavours; and,

  • be a conduit for researchers, scholars and practitioners to collaborate and exchange new educational content and delivery modes that will enhance the socioeconomic status of the diverse communities in the Islamic world
