HIGHER DEGREE RESEARCH PROGRAMS
The School of Business offers 2 HDR programs, namely the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil).
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD program in the School of Business may be undertaken in the
key areas of research offered by the School, which
includes accounting and finance, business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, economics, management, and marketing.
PhD candidates are required to carry out an independent research program under the supervision of an experienced member of the School’s academic staff. Candidates are required to submit an original thesis that makes a major contribution to the discipline by way of new knowledge.
The principal
component of the PhD is a major thesis of up to 100,000
words, embodying the results of a research project.
Duration
of Candidature
The
normal length of candidature is considered to be three
years full-time (six-years part-time). It is
strongly recommended that a student designs a project
which can be completed within three years.
The minimum
period of PhD candidature is 24 months full time (48 months
part-time). The maximum period of PhD candidature
is four years of full time, or its equivalent in
part-time candidature of up to a maximum of 8 years of
part-time study.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The Master of Philosophy program is
a 100% research degree signifying that the candidate has successfully completed a course of research training and satisfied the examiners criteria in carrying out a research project and providing critical analyses on the research results. An MPhil thesis is expected to make a contribution to an existing body of knowledge by applying, clarifying, critiquing or interpreting that knowledge.
The MPhil
program may be undertaken in the key areas of research offered by the School,
which includes accounting and finance, business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, economics, management and marketing.
The principal component of the program is a thesis of up to 50,000 words embodying the results of the research project.
Duration
of Candidature
The Master of
Philosophy program is a 24 months full-time equivalent
program.
